Watch the Final Trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

The new adventure from Lucasfilm Games and MachineGames arrives in one week.

Whoever asked Indiana Jones, “Don’t you want to know what this is all about?” might’ve been surprised by the archaeologist’s frank answer: “You’re damn right I do.” We certainly agree with him. And in just a few more days, it’ll be time to find out when Indiana Jones and the Great Circle arrives on Xbox Series X | S consoles, PC, and Game Pass on December 9.

Today, gamers and Indy fans alike were treated to a final launch trailer for The Great Circle, which furthers the promise of a new adventure richly layered with as much storytelling, characters, and historical details as any of the Indiana Jones feature films or The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones television series.

As is evident in the trailer, history itself seems to be The Great Circle’s true focal point. “Every good story is told one way or another,” the villainous Emmerich Voss tells Indy, “and I know one you haven’t heard of.” It would appear that this story has something to do with the purported Great Circle, which another character describes as “a conduit for some kind of power.” Indy explains that Voss “believes it will secure his place in history.”

The trailer has plenty of thematic echoes to Indy’s other adventures, not least of which are literal musical themes from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). And we find strains of Raiders’ villain, René Belloq, in Voss’ obsession with one’s place in history. Belloq makes a similar point when he tempts Indy’s curiosity about the fabled Ark of the Covenant in Raiders. “All your life has been spent in pursuit of archaeological relics,” he tells Indy, who is threatening to destroy the artifact in the film. “Inside the Ark are treasures beyond your wildest aspirations. You want to see it open as well as I. Indiana, we are simply passing through history. This…this is history.”

Set in 1937, The Great Circle is nearly an immediate sequel to the events in that first Indiana Jones adventure. For the fans, this story is a kind of “full circle” moment. And of course, what brings it home is Indy’s personality, equal parts reverence and irreverence.

“You’re good at this, Dr. Jones,” says Indy’s new companion, Gina, during their journey together. “I know enough to get me into trouble,” he responds. And aren’t we excited to see just how much trouble our favorite archaeologist can manage to get into, and of course, get out of again.
